My Top 10 Tips for Mastectomy Recovery

Facing a mastectomy is a significant step, and preparing for recovery is just as important. Whether you're planning for yourself or supporting a loved one, these essentials, gathered from my own experience with both a double mastectomy and an explant surgery, will make your or your loved one's post-op journey smoother and more comfortable.

1. Lean on Your Circle or Be the Circle: My fellow warriors, surround yourself with those who know how to be alongside you, are calming, helpful, and make you laugh! For me, those were my sisters and friends who are like sisters. And to the caregivers: your willingness to learn and support is truly commendable. Thank you for walking alongside your loved one!

2. Embrace Comfort with Button-Front Pajamas, Shirts, and Easy-to-Pull-on Pants: Forget struggling with overhead shirts and tight leggings! When navigating stitches, drains, swelling, and limited movement, comfy clothes are your best friend. They're drain-friendly, won't bug your incisions, and can make you feel human! I love these dreamy pajamas from Carakit. Think gentle fabrics and effortless dressing.

3. Sleep Soundly with a Supportive Wedge Pillow: Finding a comfortable sleeping position after surgery can be a real challenge. A wedge pillow will be your best friend, offering gentle elevation and support and ensuring you get the rest you deserve. In addition, small squishy pillows help rest the arms! Prioritize restorative sleep.

4. Freshen Up with a Gentle Body Wipe with a Pleasing Scent: Full showers are off the table for a while, but that doesn't mean you can't feel clean and refreshed. These beautifully scented body wipes are a lifesaver, providing a quick and easy way to feel your best. Maintain a sense of freshness and well-being.

5. Secure Drains with Large Safety Pins: Skip the expensive drain pockets! Two to Three-inch safety pins are the simplest and most effective way to keep your drains secure to your recovery bra/wrap(clip around, not through drains!). Simplify your recovery process.

6. Wrap Yourself in Comfort with a Cozy Wrap and Grippy Socks: Who doesn't crave Comfort during recovery? A soft blanket/wrap and grippy socks will keep you warm and prevent slips when mobility is limited. Prioritize warmth and safety. Check out the "Comforting Pair" from Carakit.

7. Find Calm with Essential Oils: Healing is a journey for both body and mind. Essential oils can create a calming atmosphere, promoting relaxation and emotional well-being. Nurture your emotional health.

8. Nourish Your Body with Healing Foods: Prepare a selection of healthy, whole, and healing foods - A well-stocked pantry is key. It's more than okay to ask for what sounds good to you. Fuel your body's recovery.

9. Immerse Yourself in Entertainment: Holding books or devices can be difficult. Gear up your favorite podcasts, audiobooks, and streaming shows to keep your mind engaged and entertained. Combat boredom and promote relaxation. Gilmore Girls is a happy place for me!

10. Pamper Yourself with Professional Hair Washing: Washing your hair in the sink can be tricky - it was an epic fail for my sister and me! Treat yourself to a salon or beauty bar visit for a proper wash before you're cleared for full showers and lifting your arms. Indulge in a bit of self-care.

This list is more than just items; it's a collection of tools designed to provide Comfort, ease, and a sense of normalcy during a challenging time. Remember, you're not alone, and these essentials are here to support you every step of the way.
